My Desire
My beloved.
So deeply loved
Blessed from above
Princess to me
Lover to the tenth degree
You're the Dainty Daisy you see.
Holder of my heart
Object of my dreams
Beautiful woman the world sees
Always the Lovely Lady to me
Day dreams keep me company
When alone apart from you
Visions fill my mind
of being together that's true
I'm never fully balanced
as I am with you
The perfect weight to match me
The wings that lift me up
You're the blue sky I soar in
You're the ocean that sails my ship
You captain my heart and navigate my soul
to the place we come together
and bask on the beach in the sunshine
of our warming love.
A synthesizing poem that brings together multiple pet names and creates expansive metaphors. Priya is beloved, blessed from above, princess, lover, "Dainty Daisy," "Lovely Lady." She's the holder of Scott's heart, object of his dreams, beautiful woman. Daydreams keep him company when apart; visions fill his mind of being together. He's never fully balanced as he is with her—she's the perfect weight, the wings that lift him up. She's the blue sky he soars in, the ocean that sails his ship. She captains his heart and navigates his soul to where they come together and bask on the beach in the sunshine of their warming love.
This poem became a kind of culmination, bringing together so many of the names and images I've used throughout the collection. She's my beloved (Poem 29), blessed from above (theological theme), my princess (Sweet Delight), lover to the tenth degree (the highest degree possible), the Dainty Daisy (Poem 16), the Lovely Lady (Poem 13). She holds my heart, she's the object of my dreams, she's the beautiful woman the world sees but always the Lovely Lady to me. When we're apart, daydreams keep me company—I'm literally imagining being with her, and those visions are so vivid they feel true. But the biggest metaphor section was new: I'm never fully balanced without her (echoing "Balance with Precision"), she's the perfect weight that matches me, the wings that lift me up. Then I expanded even further: she's the blue sky I soar in (freedom, expansiveness, possibility), she's the ocean that sails my ship (she's not just on the ship with me—she IS the ocean, the entire environment I travel through). She captains my heart (she's in command) and navigates my soul (she guides me) to the place we come together—and that destination is like a beach where we bask in the sunshine of our warming love. It's journey and destination, movement and rest, adventure and peace, all in one.
