Our Getaway

We’ve come a long way since we first met,
sharing companionship and sex.
Becoming a couple along the way,
much joy and love fills our days.

Moving deeper in, an adventure we begin.
Together we’ll discover a weekend of fun.
To the beach we go to feel the sand,
the ocean and the sun.

Naturally we move to this time alone,
away from the life of daily grind.
To experience each other,
with only us in mind.

A loving couple we’ll be
on our special getaway.
Another memory to build,
and tell our grandchildren someday.

Synopsis:

The collection opens not with declaration or reflection but with anticipation — a couple planning time alone together, moving deliberately away from the demands of daily life toward each other. It is a fitting opening for a collection about deepening love. Before the sensory explorations, before the philosophical observations, before the theological resolutions — there is simply this: two people who want to be alone together and are making it happen. That desire and that intention are themselves a form of love.

Author's Note:

This poem came from the particular joy of having something to look forward to together. Priya and I both carry full lives — work, family, community, obligation — and the choice to step away from all of it and be fully present with each other is not incidental. It is deliberate and it is precious. The image of grandchildren at the end surprised me when it arrived. But it felt completely true. I wrote it and left it there because that is where my heart went naturally when I thought about what we are building together.
