Opportunity

As I think of what we have and what is behind us, I'm overjoyed at the thought of what is ahead of us.
Every morning is a new opportunity for me to serve God and to love an adore you.
To learn more about you and what you love.
To give more of myself to you
To lift you up and hold you in high esteem.
To grow closer to you and know you better than myself.
And my greatest desire is to obey a command from God.
To love you even as Christ loved the church and gave His life for it.
You give me that opportunity everyday and I intend to fulfill it daily.

Synopsis:

A prose-poem that reads like a devotional reflection or wedding vow. Scott expresses joy about what lies ahead, viewing every morning as a new opportunity to serve God by loving and adoring Priya. He wants to learn what she loves, give himself to her, lift her up, hold her in high esteem, and know her better than himself. His greatest desire is to obey God's command: to love her as Christ loved the church and gave His life for it. She gives him that opportunity daily, and he intends to fulfill it.

Author's Note

This poem is probably my most explicitly religious piece, and it needed to be. My love for Priya isn't separate from my faith—it's an expression of it. Every morning is a new opportunity to serve God, and one of the primary ways I do that is by loving Priya well. I want to learn what she loves, to lift her up, to know her better than I know myself. But more than anything, I want to fulfill the biblical command to love her as Christ loved the church—selflessly, sacrificially, completely. That's a high standard, maybe an impossible one, but it's what I'm striving for. Priya gives me that opportunity every day just by being in my life, and I intend to pursue it daily for as long as I live.
